Stadip Protect

SGG STADIP and SGG STADIP PROTECT are laminated safety and security glasses manufactured in accordance with standard EN 12543. They comprise two or more sheets of glass bonded together with one or more interlayers of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film. After the PVB has been placed between the glass sheets, the whole assembly is subjected to heat and pressure in an autoclave. This results in the complete adhesion of the vinyl interlayers and glass.

In the event of breakage, the glass fragments remain bonded to the PVB interlayer. In a fully framed conventional* installation the glass fragments are held together and the glass retains a residual strength while awaiting replacement.

The number and thickness of each of the components can be varied to obtain SGG STADIP or SGG STADIP PROTECT laminated glass with different characteristics to meet the safety and/or security requirements of all manner of application.

The configurations in the range are available in standard stock sizes or cut sizes.

Both annealed glasses, SGG STADIP and SGG STADIP PROTECT can be cut and worked after laminating as required.

CURRENT CODE DESIGNATION OF SGG STADIP AND SGG STADIP PROTECT GLASS CONFIGURATIONS

In European countries, the nominal thickness of laminated glass is expressed by a code, consisting of the thickness of the glass sheets and the number of PVB films used in the composition.

  • XX. Y (and if applicable, followed by the glass elements)

Each X value corresponds to the nominal thickness of the glasses. The Y value indicates the number of PVB films, the nominal thickness of a film being 0.38 mm.

For example

SGG STADIP 33.1 consists of two sheets of 3 mm nominal thickness SGG PLANILUX (implicit, as it is not specified) and one 0.38 mm PVB film. This is normally referred to as 6.4mm in the UK and Ireland.

SGG STADIP PROTECT 64.2 ANTELIO SILVER consists of a 6 mm sheet of SGG ANTELIO SILVER combined with a 4 mm sheet of SGG PLANILUX using either two 0.38 mm thickness or one 0.76 mm thickness of PVB film. This is normally referred to as 10.8mm in the UK and Ireland.

CURRENT CODE DESIGNATION OF HIGHER PERFORMANCE SGG STADIP PROTECT GLASSES

Above a certain level of performance, the code designation of SGG STADIP PROTECT glasses contains additional information which is presented in the following way:

SGG STADIP PROTECT XX YYZZ, where:

  • XX signifies a high performance protection glass,
  • YY, refers to the class of protection, defined by the relevant standard
  • ZZ, the nominal thickness of the laminated glass assembly.

The abbreviation SP, identifying the higher level of protection, does not apply to products in the first four classes defined by standard EN 356.

Note:

At the time of publication, EN 356 is a draft document and all above information is accurate at this time. SAINT-GOBAIN GLASS recommends consulting the actual standard, or contacting us directly.

SGG STADIP and SGG STADIP PROTECT are highly durable and UV stable, even in prolonged direct sunlight.

Spectrophotometric performance

The various light and energy performance factors for transmittance, reflectance and absorption depend on the type of glass and the colour of the PVB. There may be a slight variance in colour between batches of different manufacture.

Protection against ultra- violet radiation

SGG STADIP and SGG STADIP PROTECT laminated glass help protect against the risk of fading caused by the sun by eliminating up to 99% of UV radiation . This can be advantageous in applications such as shop fronts and display windows.

Thermal performance

The thermal transmittance is similar to that of monolithic glass of the same thickness. For example, the U-value of SGG STADIP PROTECT 33.2 or 6.8mm glass is 5.7 W/(m2.K).

To obtain enhanced thermal insulation performance levels, SGG STADIP or SGG STADIP PROTECT can be combined with a low-emissivity glass (eg. SGG PLANISTAR) in an SGG CLIMAPLUS double-glazed unit.

Mechanical stabilit

The behaviour of the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) in the SGG STADIP or SGG STADIP PROTECT varies according to the temperature to which it is subjected. In such assemblies it is mechanically stable at temperatures between 10 °C and 45 °C inside the glazing.

Applications

Protection in buildings is increasingly required to comply with current regulations, for insurance purposes or simply to fulfill a genuine need, especially against the risk of injury, vandalism and burglary. In homes, offices, shops or other buildings open to the public, SGG STADIP and SGG STADIP PROTECT glasses can offer appropriate safety and security solutions to meet the combined criterion of protection, aesthetics and performance .

As well as offering many additional functions, the range is graded, according to the performance level provided, in the following way:

  • protection against injury: SGG STADIP,
  • protection against glass falling from overhead glazing: SGG STADIP or SGG STADIP PROTECT,
  • protection against people falling through glass (guarding): SGG STADIP PROTECT,
  • basic protection against vandalism and burglary: SGG STADIP PROTECT; enhanced protection: SGG STADIP PROTECT SP,
  • protection against fire-arms: SGG STADIP PROTECT HC, HS, FS*,
  • protection against explosions: SGG STADIP PROTECT BS.

PROTECTION AGAINST THE RISK OF INJURY

SGG STADIP is a safety PVB laminated glass providing protection against the risk of injury caused by accidental impact. If hit with force, the glass may break around the impact area but will normally remain intact. The glass shards remain firmly adhered to the plastic interlayer. If the laminated glass is framed on all four edges with adequate edge coverage, it will be retained in the frame, providing residual integrity.

This level of safety is required in low level safety critical locations as defined by BS 6262 : part 4 : 1994 Safety related to human impact. .

For the first level of protection against injury due to accidental impact SGG STADIP starts at 6.4mm*, which is a Class B safely glass to BS 6206 : 1981 Specification for impact performance requirements for flat safety glass and safety plastics for use in buildings. The thickness of the laminated assembly must comply with applicable regulations appropriate to the application. SGG STADIP can be supplied in a wide range of thicknesses, compositions and configurations to suit almost every situation and specification.

SGG STADIP can be incorporated into double-glazed units, for example SGG CLIMAPLUS SAFE, to provide protection against the risk of injury with the advantages of enhanced thermal insulation.

OVERHEAD GLAZING

Architecture of today calls for maximum light and comfort. The use of glass increases light and creates comfortable open spaces. Glass is perfectly suited to satisfy the requirements of such applications, whilst also offering strength, safety and environmental control.

Both SGG STADIP and SGG STADIP PROTECT provide high performance solutions. If an object falls onto the glass from a neighbouring building or from maintenance operations for example, SGG STADIP / SGG STADIP PROTECT can prevent the object from passing through the glass and also minimises the risk of glass fragments falling into the space below. The PVB interlayer in SGG STADIP also improves the sound insulation properties of glass. Its sound dampening properties against impact noise from rain and hail, can be further improved by incorporating the special acoustic PVB interlayer SGG STADIP SILENCE .

* SGG STADIP is available as 4.4 mm which is a Class C safety glass to BS 6206 and as such is limited in its use as a safely glass .

GUARDING AND BALUSTRADING

SGG STADIP can be used in situations where the glass is protecting a change in level. For these applications, the glass must be fully framed on all four sides with adequate edge coverage. The glass, if broken, will be retained in the frame and will continue to provide some residual strength, integrity and weather resistance until replacement. The composition of SGG STADIP PROTECT is determined by the size of the glazing, its location, method of framing and building occupancy. It should always be installed in accordance with applicable current national regulations.

For further information on the use of glass as guarding please refer to Section 3l Technical Questions.
